Prompt six of March Meet the Maker is Tools and Materials, so here’s a selection of my favourite calligraphy supplies.

The beauty of calligraphy as a hobby is that it is relatively inexpensive to get started, in fact you can start with just a pencil and a piece of paper. Nothing fancy.

There are a vast array of different tools, inks and paper on the market which can be a little daunting to narrow down when you are just starting out. So swipe across to see my favourite basic tools 🗒️✏️✒️

Essential tools to get started would be a nib, ink, paper and nib holder. Then all the nice to have bits including pen rests, drying racks and coloured inks and paper will follow as you progress ✨

Prompt five.. let’s talk Colour 🎨

If I’m honest and as a creative I shouldn’t probably admit to this openly, I find colour and pattern overwhelming sometimes, especially strong bold colours. Does this colour go with that one, will it be too much to mix up patterns together or just stick to a colour palette of one or two. I like things to be relatively monotone, one or two colours which compliment each other and i am really trying to embrace more colour not only in my work, but my wardrobe too!

Maybe it’s being safe, maybe it’s just my style emerging but stepping out of your comfort zone every now and again can only be a good thing! Prompt number four of @marchmeetthemaker is ‘Decision’ 📍

I have always loved stationery and doodling words all over pages and when a family member bought me a pointed nib sets back from Italy in 2016 as a thank you gift I instantly fell in love with calligraphy! I’ve spent hundreds if not thousands of hours practicing letterforms, different styles and flourishes, whilst admiring all avenues of modern calligraphy art!

Social media was full of beautiful calligraphy accounts that I quickly followed at the time, but I watched and admired them from the sidelines wishing that I could have the confidence to share my calligraphy journey.

I was full of doubts, lacking any self belief in my artwork and then I made a decision which changed everything! In 2023 I enrolled on a calligraphy business course with the fabulous Kirstie who is the founder of @inkandflowstudio and that’s where everything changed for me! I chose to invest in my happiness and passions and it has turned out to be one of the BEST decisions I have made! I have now found my tribe and I love sharing my style of calligraphy with all of you!

So if you are looking for a sign to do more of what you love, start a new hobby that you have always wanted to try or share your passion with the world then let this be it! ✨

I thought I would chose a behind the scenes view for @marchmeetthemaker prompt #3

Spend a typical morning with me in the Crabtree household. As my maternity leave comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on how much I have enjoyed soaking up slower morning routines with the people and animals I love most! ✨

Although sometimes mornings are a rush and race to get out of the door, there can be beauty in the repetitiveness of the morning routine, that starts your whole day on the right foot! Heres a snippet of my mornings before I get to my calligraphy desk! 🌿

1. I always start the day with a strong cup of tea! 🫖
2. Breakfast time for me, Bea and Rolo 🍳
3.Then it’s time to head to the yard and turn out the boys into their paddocks for the day 🌱
4. Muck out stables, refill water and haynets (I wish sweeping was this speedy)🐴
5. More tea ☕️
6. Taking Rolo for his morning walkies 🐾

I would describe my style as ‘ever-evolving’.

My calligraphy has changed so much from when I started practicing in 2016 and it continues to develop as I refine and hone my skill.

My style of calligraphy is predominantly modern, where there are very few ‘ traditional rules’. I usually change my styles to fit the client brief and which pen or tool is best for the job! My letterforms have evolved so much and I love changing up the way I write certain letters depending on my mood that day.

I have loved experimenting with lots of different tools and pointed nib calligraphy is definitely at the top of the list! I love adapting my style to fit the clients vision and working to create something unique and beautiful ✍️

Leaving behind 2024 with a full and grateful heart, a year filled with so many incredibly special moments and many firsts mixed in with navigating the trials and tribulations of life and walking a new path✨

2024 will always have an incredibly special place for me as it gave me my beautiful daughter Beatrix and for that, I will be eternally thankful.

In between the highs and lows, I’ve managed to find the little windows to indulge in a little calligraphy magic and i can’t wait to continue to grow, learn and share this creative journey with you all in 2025. There will be some big leaps to come which are going to be scary and exciting in equal measure and I’ve got lots of lovely ideas to share in the coming months.. including my first workshops 🙌 watch this space!
